Costume Project

The costume project was a project where I had to choose a Greek God or Goddess and then choose an era to put them into. Then I would make a costume with the Greek God or Goddess in that era. The only material we could use was paper, tape, and a stapler.

I did this project with a partner and we chose to do Artemis in the Renaissance Era. Artemis is the goddess of the moon, nature, hunting, childbirth, and chastity. She was the daughter of Zeus and Leto, meaning she would likely have been royalty in the Renaissance Era. Her main weapon was the bow and arrow and her representative animal was the stag. The Renaissance Era featured a tight bodice, a long, layered skirt, an exposed neckline, and long, flared sleeves that create the silhouette of the Renaissance era.

Before starting this project, costume was definitely the part of technical theatre I was most afraid of. I wouldn't say I have a great fashion sense and I certainly had no experience in any area of costume design, but I found that I immensely enjoyed this project. Once I began actually making the dress, it was really satisfying to see everything slowly come together. I also found that costume design is weirdly very peaceful to me and I enjoyed every part of the process starting from the research to the rough sketch to the actual costume making. If I ever had to be in a crew for theatre, I wouldn't be mad if I was put in costumes.
